All VegTrug wooden products are pre-treated in our factory with a water-based and food-safe preservative. We recommend re-treating products annually with a similar preservative.
Availability and quality of such preservatives varies from country to country, making it difficult for us to safely recommend any.
Where you live and the environment surrounding you will also affect how often the product needs to be treated. Drier, hot conditions will mean wooden items needs more frequent maintenance.
In the UK, we recommend Protek's range of water-based preservatives. Natural wood can be preserved with their ‘Clear Tough Coat’. You can also stain the VegTrug with any colour from their 'Wood Protector' and follow up with a coat of the ‘Clear Tough Coat’ to finish.
If you live overseas we can recommend taking advice from your local hardware store and carefully seeking out a water-based and food-safe wood preservative.
We recommend using a general purpose vegetable growing compost in the VegTrug. For other plants like flowers, it's always best to take advice from the grower or supplier; they know how to care for their work the best!
A fully planted VegTrug, in Spring when growth is at its highest, will need fertilising after the first six weeks of planting.
We recommend that the soil is ‘top dressed’ annually to replace the nutrient lost during the growing season. This means removing the top 12-15cm of soil and replacing it with new soil. This should be mixed in as far as possible.
We recommend emptying the VegTrug, letting it fully dry to then retreat and refill every few seasons.
The VegTrug is designed for an exterior environment and can be left outside throughout the seasons. If you wish to cover and protect your empty VegTrug over the winter, you can use the Winter Cover.
Regardless of storage over winter, we always recommend that products like the Classic VegTrug be re-treated annually with a food-safe and water-based preservative.
All types of wood can take colour very differently, and VegTrugs are no exception. Wooden items are rarely uniform in colour, which makes every VegTrug unique.
The Grey Wash treatment is a wash of colour, and is not designed to be a solid colour or uniform in appearance, heightening this uniqueness. Washes will also naturally fade in sunlight.
We recommend that products like the Classic VegTrug be re-treated annually with a food-safe and water-based preservative. For those in Grey Wash, this means you have the opportunity to choose a darker shade if you so wish.
We recommend locating your VegTrug in a relatively sheltered and sunny area. This is especially important when using frames or covers on your VegTrug, as high winds can damage them.
Our products are designed to be static and we would not recommend adding any kind of wheels. The weight of soil in a VegTrug simply does not allow this to be done safely as the VegTrug design ‘locks’ together when filled with soil and is static. As soon as you move it, the momentum of that weight (if it was stopped quickly by a stone or step) would potentially break the product and there are risks involving the larger VegTrugs (which can weigh up to half a metric ton when filled and watered) rolling along inclines.
